This is from last weekend's Counterfire day school in London. It is my introduction (and summing-up) for a session on revolt and imperialism in the Arab world.
I was originally asked to talk about Syria for 15 minutes, with someone else speaking on Egypt for the same amount of time, so that between us we would do justice to the title. But the other speaker had to withdraw and, although I somewhat adapted my notes, this explains the unmistakable bias towards Syria here.
