  1. This event is being rearranged and will not be taking place this weekend.

  2. Anon. Is this true, or are you just trying to keep supporters away?

  3. Yes, I can confirm that. Sorry for delay - I've been on the phone to various people for the last several hours, explaining things and discussing next steps. It's likely that plans for an initial event will be announced on Monday, then a really major re-arranged event soon after.

  4. Why was the event cancelled at such short notice and who is responsible?

  5. It was cancelled on Friday morning, when Unison's representative for liaising over the event withdrew the union from practical participation at extreme short notice. This was in response to the escalated threat from EDL etc to counter-demonstrate (the wrong response, obviously). They were the biggest organisation involved, and were responsible for most practicalities including stewarding. The lack of stewarding obviously meant the council - who organisers met with on Friday morning - made it clear the event was untenable. Campaign and community groups who supported the event had remained committed to the event, as they took a different view on how to respond to a far-right mobilisation.
