I recommend listening to this thoughtful and well-produced podcast, from North East-based site 'The Cultural Thing'.
It uses the student protests and occupation in Newcastle (and the wider national movement) as the starting point for considering some bigger questions. It is, amongst other things, a good deconstruction of the myth that protesting simply isn't part of our national character.
