This is from Tony Benn's Diaries in 1994. Benn made this observation after a protest against the Tories' Criminal Justice Bill (with thanks to my sister, Anna, for alerting me to it):
"As a member of an elected body I shouldn't say it, but historically riot has played a role. And something has got to be done to get this representation back again, because all the vote is, is just a chance to vote between Blair and Major and there's nothing in it. And whoever you vote for you're going to end up with the same policies. A real problem this."
